Selling on TikTok Shop with Shopify: what to set up first

How to prepare your Shopify store, product listings, promotions and creator partnerships before you open a TikTok Shop.

TikTok Shop lets people buy products straight from videos and live streams, without leaving the app. For brands already selling on Shopify, it can be a valuable extra channel, but only if the basics are in place before you open. Shops that launch without preparation often struggle with rejected listings, stock problems and slow early sales. Here is the order we recommend.

Is TikTok Shop right for your products?

TikTok Shop works best for products that are easy to show in a short video: things people can see, try, use or transform on camera. Beauty, fashion, home, gadgets, food and hobby products often do well. Products that need long explanations or careful consultation can still sell, but usually rely more on creators and live streams to tell the story.

1. Check eligibility and categories

TikTok Shop is available to sellers in a growing list of countries, and some product categories need approval, certificates or extra documents. Check what applies to your business and products before you plan a launch date, and prepare business registration, bank and tax details in advance.

2. Connect Shopify properly

Connecting your Shopify store keeps products, stock and orders in sync, so you manage one catalogue and reduce the risk of overselling. Orders from TikTok flow into Shopify, where your existing fulfilment process can handle them.

  • Decide which products to sell on TikTok first. A focused range of best sellers is easier to promote than your entire catalogue.
  • Check that every product has accurate weights, dimensions and stock levels.
  • Make sure variants, such as sizes and colours, are set up consistently.
  • Test a full order, from purchase to fulfilment, before you promote anything.

3. Write listings for TikTok shoppers

TikTok shoppers often arrive from a video with a single question in mind. Listings should answer it quickly.

  • Clear, specific titles that say what the product is and who it is for.
  • Bright, simple images that read well on a small screen, including one showing the product in use.
  • Complete attributes, sizes and variants, so listings are approved first time.
  • Short descriptions that answer the questions viewers ask in comments.
  • Accurate delivery times and a clear returns policy.

4. Set up shipping and customer service

TikTok Shop has performance standards for shipping speed, cancellations and customer responses. Agree who will handle messages, how quickly orders will ship and how returns are processed before you go live. Slow shipping or unanswered messages can limit how your products are shown.

5. Plan promotions

Flash sales, vouchers and bundles help new shops build momentum. Plan them around product launches and seasonal moments, and check that your margins still work after platform fees, creator commissions and discounts. A simple promotions calendar stops you running offers that compete with each other.

Pricing for the channel

Decide early whether TikTok prices will match your website or differ. Many brands keep prices consistent and use TikTok-only vouchers or bundles for launches, which protects your main store while still giving shoppers a reason to buy in the app. Whatever you choose, keep it consistent so customers do not feel they paid the wrong price.

6. Work with creators

Affiliate creators show your products in their own videos and lives and earn a commission on sales. For many brands, this is where most TikTok Shop sales come from.

  • Look for creators whose audience matches your customers, not just those with the most followers.
  • Send samples with a clear brief: key features, what to show and what to avoid.
  • Agree commission rates and timelines in advance.
  • Track who posted, which videos sold and who to work with again.

7. Keep content flowing

Shops do best when there is a steady stream of content. Your own account should post regularly alongside creator videos, showing products in use, behind the scenes and answers to common questions. A simple monthly content calendar keeps your channels active without taking over your week.

8. Measure and adjust

Review which products, videos, creators and promotions drive sales each month. Double down on what works, refresh listings that get views but few orders, and retire products that do not suit the channel.

A launch checklist

  • Eligibility and category approvals confirmed.
  • Shopify connected and a test order completed.
  • First product range listed and approved.
  • Shipping, returns and customer service owners agreed.
  • Launch promotion planned.
  • First creators briefed and samples sent.

Live shopping

Live streams let you demonstrate products, answer questions in real time and run time-limited offers. They can work well for launches and promotions, but they take preparation: a simple plan for what to show, products pinned and ready, stock confirmed and someone to handle questions in the chat. Many brands start with creators hosting lives and add their own once they are comfortable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing the whole catalogue at once instead of starting with proven best sellers.
  • Launching before shipping and returns are set up properly.
  • Running discounts without checking margins after fees and commissions.
  • Sending samples to creators without a brief or follow-up plan.
  • Letting customer messages go unanswered.
  • Posting heavily for a week, then going quiet.

Avoiding these early gives your shop a much stronger start, and makes it easier to grow once the first products begin to sell.
