Local SEO for service businesses: a practical checklist

The on-page, technical and Google Business Profile basics that help nearby customers find you, in an order you can actually work through.

For businesses that serve a local area, showing up when nearby customers search is often the most valuable kind of SEO. Someone searching for a dentist, roofer or accountant near them usually needs one soon. No one can guarantee a position on Google, but getting the basics right removes the obstacles that hold most local sites back. Work through this checklist in order.

How local search works

Local results combine three things: how relevant your business is to the search, how close you are to the person searching and how prominent your business is, which includes reviews, mentions and the strength of your website. You cannot change your location, but you can make your relevance and prominence much clearer.

1. Your Google Business Profile

Your profile is often the first thing a local customer sees, before your website. Treat it as a second homepage.

  • Claim and verify the profile, and choose the most accurate primary category.
  • Add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply.
  • List your services, service areas, hours and a clear description.
  • Upload real photos of your team, premises and work, and add new ones regularly.
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear.
  • Use posts to share offers, news and recent projects.

2. Reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to contact you. Ask happy customers for a review at the right moment, such as when a job is finished or a treatment has gone well, and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. A thoughtful reply to a critical review often reassures future customers more than another five-star rating.

Never buy reviews, offer rewards for positive ones or post reviews on behalf of customers. Platforms remove them, and they can damage the trust you are trying to build. A steady flow of genuine reviews, collected as part of how you finish each job, is far more valuable.

3. Service and location pages

Create a page for each core service, and pages for the main towns or areas you serve where it makes sense. Each page should be genuinely useful, with details specific to that service or area: the work you do there, local projects, relevant reviews and practical information. Pages that only swap the town name are unlikely to help and can make the whole site look thin.

4. On-page basics

  • A unique title and meta description for every page, naming the service and area.
  • One clear H1 per page, with logical headings below it.
  • Internal links between related services, areas and articles.
  • Local business schema with your details, opening hours and service area.
  • Your address and phone number in the footer, matching your Google profile exactly.

5. Technical health

  • Fast pages on mobile, with compressed images and minimal plugins.
  • No broken links or missing pages, and redirects for any old addresses.
  • An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
  • HTTPS on every page.
  • Pages that work well on small screens, with tappable phone numbers.

6. Local listings

Beyond Google, make sure your business appears accurately in the directories that matter for your industry and country, such as Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp and trade associations. The goal is consistency: the same name, address, phone number and website everywhere. Inconsistent details confuse both customers and search engines.

7. Measure and improve

Google Search Console shows which searches bring you visitors and which pages appear in results. Your Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks. Review both monthly, alongside enquiries from your forms and phone calls, and improve the pages that are close to ranking well before starting new ones.

What this checklist does not cover

Content writing, such as regular articles that answer customer questions, and off-page SEO, such as earning links from other websites, can help competitive businesses further. They take ongoing effort and are best added once the foundations above are in place. We quote them separately, so you only pay for them when they make sense.

Common mistakes

  • Using a different business name or phone number on the website and the Google profile.
  • One “Services” page instead of a page per service.
  • Ignoring reviews, or replying to only the good ones.
  • Location pages with copied text and no local detail.
  • Never checking Search Console.

How long does local SEO take?

Some changes, such as completing your Google Business Profile or fixing your business details, can make a difference within weeks. Building strong service and location pages and earning reviews takes longer, often several months, and the timeline depends on how competitive your area and industry are. Treat local SEO as steady, ongoing work rather than a one-off project, and judge progress by enquiries as well as rankings.

What a strong location page includes

A useful location page answers the questions of someone in that area. For a home services business, that might mean the neighbourhoods covered, typical response times, photos of projects nearby and reviews from local customers. For a clinic, it could be parking, accessibility, opening hours and the team at that site. These details help customers decide, and they make each page genuinely different from the others.

  • A clear heading naming the service and area.
  • Specific local detail, not generic copy.
  • Reviews and examples from that area where you have them.
  • Opening hours, directions or service coverage.
  • A clear call to action and contact details.
